Age Discrimination - Pitfalls and Best Practices

July 20th, 10am to Noon

The Impact of Age Discrimination

We often think about the impact ageism has on older workers, but it happens to people at all stages in their career and is often exacerbated by other characteristics a person may have. For companies to have highly functioning multigenerational teams, we need to ensure that people of all ages have the opportunity to contribute and participate in opportunities.

All too frequently, we say something that may be perceived as ageist or make an unconscious decision that may preclude an individual from an opportunity based on their age. In 2021/22, cases of age discrimination formed the highest number of cases taken to employment tribunals compared with other protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010.

“Ageism refers to how we think (stereotypes), feel (prejudice), and act (discrimination) towards others and ourselves based on age.”
