To deliver a meaningful and personalised plan that enables individuals to transition to a life eventually outside of work in a dignified, valued, and supportive manner.
Welcome to the final instalment of our five-part Retirement Transition Plan (RTP) blog series. Built for individuals navigating the Q3 Life Stage (typically age 50+), RTP is a human-centred framework designed to help you approach retirement or career evolution with clarity, purpose, and confidence.
Through the five key phases, Consideration, Scope, Road Testing, Discussion, and Implementation, RTP offers a holistic, research-informed approach to managing one of life’s most profound transitions.
What is RTP?
The Retirement Transition Plan isn’t just a checklist, it’s a deeply personal journey rooted in both research and real-life experiences. Over four years of qualitative research and hundreds of lived stories have shaped a process that addresses the emotional, practical, and professional dimensions of later-life transitions.
Key focus areas include:

• Health and well-being
• Flexible working and second careers
• Family and community dynamics
• Succession planning and knowledge sharing
• Identity, legacy, and fulfilment
Because your future is best shaped with others, RTP encourages collaboration—with family, mentors, and leaders, ensuring your next chapter is both personal and sustainable.
Phase 5: Implement
Where Your Plan Becomes Reality
This is the moment where insight becomes action. The Implementation stage is where your Retirement Transition Plan moves from theory into lived experience. Whether you’re planning a gradual shift, a bold leap, or something in between, this phase is about finalising timelines, clarifying responsibilities, and putting the right support in place.
Key Steps to Implement Your RTP
Formalise Your RTP
Document your agreed responsibilities, timelines, and actions in your RTP Journal. This becomes your working guide and reference point throughout the process.
Secure Support and Resources: Identify the practical and emotional support you’ll need. This might include mentoring, reduced hours, job sharing, or preparation for full retirement.
Monitor and Adjust: Continue to evaluate your RTP regularly. Make updates as life evolves and reflect on what’s working, and what’s not.
This is a living plan, built to evolve with you. It also serves as a legacy blueprint for others navigating similar journeys.
Your Responsibilities
Client-Facing Roles: Create a detailed client profile, communication plans, and highlight key relationship management needs. Collaborate with your People Leader to design a smooth handover.
Non-Client-Facing Roles: Map out ongoing and upcoming work. Identify tasks, communication needs, and possible colleagues to step in or support.
Maintain Your RTP Journal: Track discussion summaries, progress updates, and reflections. If transitioning to full retirement, start testing your post-work plans and make necessary adjustments.
Provide Formal Notification (for Full Retirement): Give at least 6 months’ notice to support smooth recruitment and transition planning.
Continue to Road Test: Your RTP isn’t static. Keep exploring, learning, and shaping your path.
People Leader Responsibilities
Manage Timelines & Check-ins: Establish regular one-to-ones and co-create a transition timeline that supports both individual and team goals.
Support Succession Planning: Allow enough time, ideally six months, for onboarding successors. Create detailed handover plans and allocate proper training.
Utilise Flexible Frameworks: Draw on HR tools for job sharing, reduced hours, or phased retirement options.
Adjust Team Structures: Realign team responsibilities to support continuity and workload balance.
Celebrate Contributions: Mark this significant milestone meaningfully, recognising the individual’s value and legacy.
Consider an Alumni Network: Maintain long-term connection and invite former colleagues to mentor or consult when needed.
Shared Responsibilities
Collaborate on Timeline & Communication: Work together to ensure clarity and reduce disruption throughout the transition.
Storytelling & Legacy Sharing: Consider creating a podcast, blog, or case study about your RTP journey. This not only inspires others but also promotes best practices across the organisation.
Recapping Your RTP Journey
Throughout the RTP process, you’ve moved through five thoughtful and actionable stages:
1. Consideration – Reflecting on values, goals, and aspirations
2. Scope – Exploring pathways and defining objectives
3. Road Testing – Trying out ideas and refining direction
4. Discuss – Collaborating with key stakeholders
5. Implement – Acting with confidence and clarity
